The college was established in the year 1962 with a generous donation from  late  Kamal Dowerah after whom the college is named. It has been a co-educational College since its beginning. The college is situated in the Rajabahar area of Dergaon.

The college imparts education in Arts, Science and Commerce. Besides, the college has Post - Graduate class in  Economics  affiliated   under  Dibrugarh  University, and a study centre (Code 0402) of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya was established in the year 1988. The land for the Vidyalaya was donated by renowned humanitarian and philanthropist   Padmasree Dr Robin  Banerjee. The work of the Vidyalaya is dedicated mainly towards helping the children to grow  freely  in clean and healthy surrounding,   to  develop  their inherent  faculties  like self  confidence and instilling  in them the sense  of  righteousness,   discipline,  duty  to society  and  motherland.  In addition, adequate emphasis is laid on the study of rich cultural heritage of India.

The school is a coeducational, day cum residential school set in the township of Numaligarh refinery. The school building has been built with all modern  facilities  and  maintains  a   low teacher - student ratio. The school offers a great number of hobbies, clubs & other activities such  as  Debating, Dramatics, Art, Craft, Music (Vocal & Instrumental),  Computers,  Yoga, Gardening, Horse riding, Creative writing, Quizzing, Science & Mathematics Clubs, and Public speaking.
